Shaggy Rugs
We think of shaggy pile rugs as a modern development but in fact were originally developed in Norway in the 15th Century. The original shaggy or Rya rugs were plain rugs using the same hand knotted weaving technique as Persian rugs and doubled as blankets to keep at bay the bitter Scandinavian Winters. Over the centuries designs became more decorative and used more as a floor covering and as prayer rugs during wedding ceremonies.
Today’s shaggy rugs are very different, whilst many are still made by hand the vast majority are produced on high speed Wilton power looms. With the introduction of innovative new yarns the styling, designs and textures of modern shaggy rugs can differ vastly. Interesting designs and combinations of different yarn textures in same rug can create interesting and funky conclusions. Generally handmade shaggy rugs are more expensive than machine made however there are few exceptions popularly when the comparing a basic hand tufted rug to a multi textured machine made rug.

 Has been developed and designed for exclusively by Encove Ltd. In a marketplace where prices were being forced down to the detriment of quality we felt there was a need to produce a rug that will handle and perform well but is still very competitively priced. We produced Opulence in a range of rugs and carpet runners in a combination of plains, flecks and patterns. Manufactured on Wilton looms Opulence has a 5cm long heat-set polypropylene pile and a total weight of 3.5kg per square metre. Which in plain English means it is a nice soft rug that is naturally stain resistant and comfortable to walk on. |

 The Shaggy collection is our top selling range of budget priced shaggy rugs and is available in a large range shapes that include oblong, circles and hall runners. We also offer all these shapes in sizes in extra large and the oblong plain rugs in XX large. Manufactured on Wilton looms the Shaggy Collection has a 4cm long heat-set polypropylene pile and has a total weight of 2.45kg per square metre. Whist Shaggy is at a very competitive price it still has the look and texture of a more expensive rug. |

 Styled using a combination of thick and thin yarns with an extra long 7cm pile length that creates an inventively chic shaggy rug. The thicker yarn is a two-ply two-tone in sharp vibrant colours and has been engineered with a twist to bury slightly below the main yarn. The rug is produced on state of art Wilton looms and is finished with stitch-lock edging that allows the extra long shaggy pile to flow evenly over all four edges. |

 Created in a range of fashionable colours Dublin with its twisted stubby pile is more of a frieze pile (long twist pile) than a shaggy. The rugs concept was created by us to give you a rug that will give texture and design that won’t flatten quickly in heavy wear areas. Woven on high speed Wilton looms the rug has a 2.5cm long heat set polypropylene pile with total weight of 2kg per square metre. All in all it’s a rug that offers chic designing and fantastic appearance retention at a very reasonable price. |
