Traditional Rugs
Traditional Rugs Traditional rugs have design origins that date back seven millenniums to Persia and Turkey. Many of the design elements or motifs of the traditional rug had meaning and the rugs were woven to tell elaborate stories. What we see as a simple motif meant life, wealth, strength or fertility to the ancient weaver. During the French Renaissance we saw a revelation when the Savonnerie and Aubusson design houses took the ancient design concept and added ornate floral patterns and created tasteful designs that mirrored the finely detailed ceilings of the elegant chateaus.
Between then and now there has been very little change in the traditional rugs designs concept. What has changed is the method of manufacture as most rugs today are produced on high speed Wilton looms. Whilst we still can buy Traditional hand knotted that are painstakingly woven by weavers in Iran (Persia), Turkey, Afghanistan, China, India and Pakistan, many of us are driven by Price and Lifestyle to opt for the machine made versions of the traditional Rug. While they are not as popular as there modern counterparts you will always find a selection of traditional rugs at I want rug dot com, you can click on the images below to open up a bigger variety of our traditional ranges.
